PODS OUT – ISSUE 1

THE WORK’S MAGAZINE WITH A DIFFERENCE

When I worked for a Department of the UK Government called ‘Pensions & Overseas Directorate’ or POD for short, I was approached by management to take over the editorial for their departmental works magazine.

I agreed to do this only if I could completely revamp the rather tired and boring newsletter, change it’s name and add dollops of comedy. My kind of comedy is black humour, anarchic, uncontrolled by convention, rather silly & childish, preferably surreal and a little bit sick. Imagine my surprise when I was granted my wish.

The first thing I did was change the magazine name to “PODS OUT,” which reflected the name of the Directorate but was also a play on words. PODS could be a hidden meaning for testicles. So, think “testicles out”

Because I wanted to reflect my anarchic sense of fun I created the logo to look ’70s punk, in particular the Sex Pistols logo. So I started cutting out capital letters from the Sun newspaper one day, stuck them onto an A4 size piece of paper, then photocopied it. The result was my new work magazine header.
